Spirits In The Pond
Copper sheet metal conforms beautifully to the contours of a beach found tile. I found this piece of sea worn tile on a beach in Rincon, Puerto Rico. It is a soft mossy green with slightly raised white splotches that seem to swirl like bubbles. I chose to set this treasure in copper because I felt like it was the perfect metal to frame the gentle scene of this beach found tile. To liven things up and give the focal piece some soul I created a starry texture on the copper and created some organic holes and raised dots in the copper too. When you run your fingers across the tile you can feel the white splotches and I echoed that tactility in the metalwork. Flip the piece over and you will see a star filled scene that echoes the movement within the tile. I made the chain with thick gauge copper wire that I shaped into round links and then soldered them together with silver solder. The chain is beautifully finished with a spiraling clasp. I oxidized the copper to give it some soul and to make this necklace look like it emerged from antiquity. This necklace has a warm and soulful beauty and it is also a pleasure to handle. The metalwork has a pleasing tactile quality and you will also love the sound it makes when you gently pick it up and lay it down. The tile is 1&1/2" L x 1" W. The entire pendant length is 1&3/4". The chains links are 10mm and the clasp is 1&1/8" L X 1/2" W. Adjustable in length up to 20". Copper is a beautiful, earthy and strong metal and it also very inexpensive. This necklace is heirloom quality and with proper care will last for centuries. Authentic beach found tile.
