Sea Glass Rarity

Our entire Sea Glass Information section is a work in progress and will be completed by the end of the summer!

Sea glass color rarity is not an exact science. In order to establish color rarity definitively every piece of sea glass in the world would have to be taken into account. We do believe that there are some universal conclusions. Oranges, neon yellows, hot pinks, true purples ( as opposed to sun changed lavender ), opalescences and some multicolored pieces will always fall into the ultra rare category. Since sea glass comes from man made glass then what is rare in terms of glass color obviously applies to sea glass color. We do not ascribe to conclusions such as "1 out of 5000" pieces will be a certain rare color nor do we believe them to be accurate. There is still a long way to go before such clear categories can be established and the mystery of it all heightens the beauty of the experience.

We have been collecting sea glass since 1987 and stopped counting years ago after reaching 100,000 pieces. We collected most of our sea glass over a fifteen year period while living in Rincon, Puerto Rico. Our concept of color rarity is experiential, it was taught to us by the sea. The list below is based on our own experiences of collecting sea glass in Puerto Rico. Our list is meant to provide insight. Like all other sea glass color lists it should only serve as a guideline. Please consider this list to be a departure point for discussion and further investigation. As life long learners we look forward to learning even more about our passion.
