Orange Sea Glass

Rare, coveted and elusive orange sea glass is the stuff that beachcombers dream of. In nearly thirty years of collecting we have found only 73 pieces of orange sea glass on the beaches of Puerto Rico.

Coming across a piece of orange sea glass is a magical experience. Orange is an unexpected color in the marine environment. Blue, green and aquas are associated with the sea, the sky and nature and seem to be an extension of the natural world. Finding orange sea glass really wakes you up while you are wandering the beach. It is always a dazzling surprise.

In Puerto Rico sources for orange sea glass are the same as in the states. While some orange glass was produced in the art deco period my hunch is that most of the orange sea glass found in Puerto Rico comes from Avon glassware, car lights and mod era decorative glass items and art glass.

Puerto Rico is wonderfully flamboyant. Houses are painted in bright colors and look beautiful in the vibrant Caribbean sun. It is very much the norm for Puerto Rican households to be vibrant on the inside as well. Orange art glass along with other decorative and utilitarian orange glassware would be in good company in many Puerto Rican homes.
