Is The Sea Glass In Your Jewelry Genuine Sea Glass?
Yes, all of the sea glass I use is authentic sea glass that was worn smooth by the natural tumbling action of the sea.
Do You Use The Sea Glass As Found?
The only permanent change I make is a drill hole or two. I never shape, sand, color, polish or tumble it, and I never cut it to fit a setting. The legacy and beauty of genuine sea glass is what inspires me.
Where Do You Find The Sea Glass?
We found most of it in Rincón, Puerto Rico and Vieques. Vieques is an island off of Puerto Rico, where my grandmother grew up. I often wonder if any of the sea glass, porcelan dolls or marbles I found there where ever in her hands in their original form when she was a child. These days we focus on collecting sea glass in Costa Rica, Indonesia, Europe and the USA.
Much of the sea glass I use in my jewelry was collected at a tidal pool near a surf break called Rivermouth in Rincón, Puerto Rico. This tidal pool was named as a top sea glass collecting spot in a Martha Stewart Living Magazine article. When I first moved to Rincón I lived on this beach and spent entire days beachcombing between this tidal pool and the adjoining town of Aguada. I rarely encountered another beachcomber. Once I spotted a large piece of teal patterned sea glass and walked past it for days before I picked it up because it looked so beautiful in the sand. It was the summer when the surf is flat and I knew the tide would not retrieve it for a few days. ![]()
The sea glass seen on this website is from all over the world. We collected all of the sea glass from Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Bali, Italy, and Hawaii. The sea glass from the Outer Banks was collected by us or by a friend. The English sea glass & the sea glass from the Pacific Northwest was provided by hardcore beachcombers.
Do You Buy Or Sell Loose Sea Glass?
I have an extensive collection of sea glass that I collected myself. After twenty years in business I recently purchased sea glass for the first time from reputable collectors, and that has given me the opportunity to work with different types of sea glass. I do sell loose sea glass that is perfect for home decor but is not jewelry or collector quality: Sea Glass Pieces and Other Treasures From The Beach
What Criteria Do You Use To Select Sea Glass Pieces For Use In Jewelry?
I rule out sharp or cracked pieces. I then look for what is beautiful, striking or interesting. Most of the seaglass in my jewelry is fully frosted but there are times when a flaw is what makes a piece interesting and that is pointed out in the description. A piece may be nearly completely frosted with a shiny spot in recessed areas. This can make an interesting contrast especially with bottle rims.
Where Did You Learn To Make Jewelry?
The school of trial and error. During my first year living back in the states I travelled to California on a regular basis to study ancient wire working techniques with Connie Fox, a world renowned wire jewelry artist and teacher. It is her I credit for my latest direction.
How Long Have You Been Making Jewelry?
I have been making sea glass jewelry professionally for over twenty years. As far as I know my business is the oldest full time sea glass jewelry business anywhere. I started in Rincón, Puerto Rico which was a true backwater at the time. There were very few tourist then but I was able to make ends meet due to the very low cost of living there during that era.
