Biography
In 1987 I was twenty three and I took a vacation trip to Puerto Rico. I am half Puerto Rican and went to visit relatives on the west coast of the island. I decided to stay and my return ticket expired.
Immediately upon finding sea glass I knew that it would define my life. I do not remember the moment I began to make sea glass jewelry, but do not remember a time in Puerto Rico when I did not. At first I sold by way of the coconut telegraph, there were very few tourists then but I made a living. In the early 1990's I expanded and sold sea glass jewelry from a table on the beach in front of a small hotel. During that time The Lazy Parrot Inn in Rincón offered me a large display space, which turned out to be a tremendous opportunity.
My husband, a Florida native, and I left Puerto Rico in 2002. The year before my father, who was a physician at Johns Hopkins, died of a glioma which is a type of brain tumor. I spent a lot of time in the states during his illness and became interested in living stateside. Shortly after his death we moved into my families thirty year old cottage on the Outer Banks of North Carolina which was in need of some tender loving care and painted the house aquamarine in honor of one of my favorite sea glass colors.
We now live between Englewood, Florida and Southern Shores, which is in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Englewood is on the gulf coast of Florida. The Gulf Of Mexico is one of my favorite bodies of water, however there is a lot more sea glass in the Outer Banks!
I shipped a massive sea glass collection to the states and mercifully it all got here! I have recently joined the North American Sea Glass Association. My business is the oldest in the North American Sea Glass Association and is one of the first full time sea glass businesses to come into existence anywhere. In addition to being a professional beachcomber I am also a Kripalu certified yoga teacher.
