Puerto Rico: Red Sea Glass

Red sea glass or red beach glass that was collected on the beaches of Rincon, Puerto Rico

The color red is associated with power, passion and wealth so it is no wonder that red sea glass is coveted. In addition to being such an empowering color I think it is desired by collectors because it is so unexpected in the marine environment. Blue, green, teal and turquoise are associated with the sea, these pieces seem to be an extension of the sea itself, whereas finding red sea glass comes as a surprise.

In Puerto Rico red is the most common of all the rare colors. Most of the red sea glass collected in Puerto Rico is the same color as Anchor Hocking's Royal Ruby or is a deep dark garnet red. Bright red pieces are found on the island as well and are the rarest of the reds.

The Anchor Hocking Glass Corporation produced a line of red glassware called Royal Ruby from the late 1930's to the late 1960's and then again briefly in the 1970's. During the 1950's Schlitz beer asked Anchor Hocking to create a red beer bottle for them and Schlitz Beer was bottled in Anchor Hocking Royal Ruby for a short run throughout the 1950's.

As I pointed out earlier red sea glass in Puerto Rico is a rare sea glass color but it is not the rarest - it is the most common of the rare colors. It is not unheard of to find several pieces in one day even after several other collectors collected in the same place on the same day.
