Sea Glass From The Outer Banks Of North Carolina

Ronnie and I moved from Rincon, Puerto Rico to Southern Shores, North Carolina in 2002. We moved into our families cottage which was built in the 1970's by my grandmother. Southern Shores is a town on the Outer Banks between Duck and Kitty Hawk. While growing up our family would spend most of the summer there. Like anywhere the Outer Banks has seen it's fair amount of changes but we still find our home there to be a sanctuary. The Outer Banks was the perfect place for us to adjust to life in the states. We spent the first few years fixing up our house and painted it aquamarine in honor of one of my favorite sea glass colors.

Finding sea glass on the Outer Banks prooved to be a real challenge for me at first as I had a hard time seeing sea glass on the beach because I wasn't use to the lighting on the beach or sand color. No matter though I spent winters taking long beach walks with our dog embracing the incredible wild winter seas.

In the Outer Banks the local consensus is that the best place to collect sea glass is in south Nags Head. However, sea glass can be found on beaches up and down the Outer Banks and we have found quite a bit in Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk and Pea Island as well. We have also found some sound glass on beaches that are on the sound.

Although the Outer Banks even on an epic day does not match what I am use to elsewhere it is still a very magical experience to collect sea glass there. I once asked my husband to stop the car at a beach access and off I went onto the beach and found a large piece of amber sea glass directly in front of the beach access.

One summer we were lazing around after dinner and it was just starting to get dark. All of a sudden I stood up and said "Come on honey let's go to the beach!" we got on our bikes and headed for the beach. I ran up the beach walkway and onto the beach and there was a large piece of lavender sea glass sitting there by itself on hard wet sand. There were no other shells, pebbles or sea glass around it. This treasure had just washed in and would have possibly washed out a few seconds later.
