I hope you enjoy your visit to our website. My name is Lisl and I have been making sea glass jewelry for twenty five years. This adventure began in 1987 when I was in my early twenties and went on what was suppose to be a two week vacation to visit my family in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. On the beaches of Rincon, a neighboring town, I found an abundance of sea glass and seashells. Under the spell of wanderlust I surrendered to the tropical ether and Rincon became my home for the next fifteen years. My return ticket back to the states expired. With the beach treasures I collected I started making jewelry and other tropical crafts. At first I sold my creations by way of the coconut telegraph and from a table on the beach. Eventually a local hotel offered me my own gallery space. This gave me the time and freedom to create - no more lugging tables and setting up shop on the beach! Now my jewelry is sold exclusively here on our website and by appointment. These days we live stateside and call two locations our home. One is the town of Southern Shores on the Outer Banks of North Carolina and the other is Sarasota County which is on the gulf coast of Florida. My husband and I are beachcombers and wander beaches all over the world in search of sea glass and other sea changed treasures. Most of our jewelry is made with sea glass that we collected ourselves. This is not just a sea glass jewelry business for us, it is a lifestyle and a passion. Sea glass inspires us to follow our hearts and to have faith in our creativity and innovation. Our journey to the internet was a long and meandering one and we are latecomers to the web. However, Out Of The Blue Sea Glass Jewelry is the oldest full time sea glass jewelry business in the world. I make jewelry for free spirits and salty souls that love time worn things and long for the craftsmanship of bygone eras. I find that sea glass evokes primeval memory. It looks to have emerged from an ancient place yet is relatively modern. It looks to be a product of nature yet comes from manmade glass. I often find myself wondering what kind of jewelry ancient people that lived by the sea would have made with sea glass. With this inquiry in mind I strive to make sea glass jewelry that has a rustic elegance and an ancient yet timeless beauty. Each ear wire and pendant bale is lovingly shaped and finished by hand in our studio. Each bracelet and necklace is hand pieced together. In other words our jewelry is made from scratch. Using age-old techniques and simple hand tools I shape and form precious metal wire into jewelry. Inspired by the ancients I strive to make jewelry that not only has the potential to become an heirloom but looks to have emerged from antiquity. What Is Sea Glass Or Beach Glass?
Sea glass or beach glass comes from our lost broken glass that found its way to the sea where it is transformed into frosted gem like treasures by the natural tumbling action of the tides. Both terms sea glass or beach glass can refer to glass that has emerged from the sea and beach glass refers to glass that has emerged from a body of fresh water such as one of the Great Lakes. In Puerto Rico sea glass is often refered to as crystal de mar or vidrio de mar. Sea glass is often poetically referred to as "Mermaids Tears" and washes up on beaches all over the world. In writing you will sometimes see seaglass, or beachglass. I love the oneness of "seaglass" after all those years in the ocean it has become something beyond man made glass. It is as if the glass has blended with the sea and the two are now inseparable. The way you can hold a seashell up to your ear and hear the ocean I find that you can feel the power of the sea when you hold a piece of sea glass in your hand.
All of our sea glass jewelry is made with 100% genuine sea glass. All of our sea glass was collected on a beach and was worn smooth only by the sea. Under no circumstance has it ever been cut to fit a setting, chemically etched or placed in a tumbler. Other than a drill hole the sea glass comes to you as found on the beach. Out Of The Blue Seaglass Jewelry has never and will never be involved with creating or selling imitation sea glass. We consider imitation sea glass to be craft glass that has no relation to sea glass whatsoever. If glass was not worn smooth only the natural forces of the sea then it is not sea glass, seaglass, beach glass or beach glass it is craft glass. Most of the sea glass in our jewelry was collected on the beaches of Puerto Rico and England.
